Your options
- Quartz. Engineered stone that doesn't need sealing and resists stains. The most popular choice in Ontario kitchens now.
- Granite. Natural stone, every slab different. Very heat-resistant, needs occasional sealing.
- Laminate. The most affordable, with many stone and wood looks. Newer laminates look far better than the old ones but can't take hot pots or knife cuts.
- Butcher block. Warm wood, often used on islands. Needs oiling and care around the sink.

How countertop replacement works
- Choose the material and colour, and an edge profile.
- Template. Once the cabinets are in, the fabricator measures them exactly.
- Fabrication. Stone is cut to the template, with sink and cooktop cut-outs. This usually takes one to two weeks.
- Install. Counters are set and seamed, then the sink and faucet are reconnected.
While you're at it
New counters are a good time to replace the sink and faucet, add an undermount sink (which needs stone or quartz), and redo the backsplash, since the old tile usually comes off with the old counter.
Questions
Can you replace counters without new cabinets?
Yes, if the cabinets are solid and level. Stone is heavy, so the contractor will check that the cabinets can take the weight.
Quartz or granite?
Quartz needs no sealing and has a more even look. Granite has more natural variation and handles heat better. Both are durable.
How long until I have a working sink?
With stone, usually one to two weeks between template and install. Some contractors can set a temporary counter for the sink in the meantime.
Will my backsplash survive?
Often not. Tile is usually bonded to the wall right at the counter line and breaks when the old counter comes out. Budget for a new backsplash.
