Updates that make a big difference
- Backsplash tile. Subway, zellige-style, large-format porcelain or a full-height slab behind the range.
- Sink and faucet. A deeper single bowl, a pull-down faucet, or a new undermount sink with new counters.
- Lighting. Pot lights, pendants over the island and under-cabinet lights. Wiring needs a licensed electrician and an ESA permit.
- Hardware. New pulls and soft-close hinges.
- Range hood. Upgrading to a hood that actually vents outside.
- Appliance changes. Fitting a larger fridge or a new range into the existing cabinets.
Backsplash tips
The backsplash is where you can have fun without a big budget. Taking tile to the underside of the upper cabinets, or all the way to the ceiling on a range wall, looks finished. Light, simple tile keeps a kitchen feeling bigger. Ask for outlets to be moved or extended, so they sit neatly in the new tile.
Combine with painted cabinets
New counters, a new backsplash, painted cabinets and new hardware together can make a kitchen look new for a fraction of a full renovation. See countertops, and FindPainting.ca for cabinet painting.
Questions
How long does a backsplash take?
Usually one to two days, including grout. Bigger areas, small mosaic tiles and lots of outlets take longer.
Can new tile go over old tile?
Sometimes, if the old tile is solid and flat, but it thickens the wall and complicates outlets and trim. Removing it usually gives a cleaner result.
Do I need an electrician for new lights?
Yes. Lighting and wiring changes should be done by a licensed electrical contractor with an ESA permit.
What's the cheapest way to update a kitchen?
Paint, new hardware, a new backsplash and new lighting. Add new counters if the budget allows.
